De Mercedes is niet persé groter, maar wel zuiniger dan de Volvo
Het is nog niet eens zo gek lang geleden dat je het aantal elektrische auto’s dat in Nederland te koop werd aangeboden, op twee handen kon tellen. Inmiddels geldt dat alleen al voor het segment waarin de Mercedes EQB en Volvo XC40 opereren. In deze test vergelijken we beide compacte crossovers met elkaar.
Ruimte
Mercedes voert in dit deel van de markt een tweetal modellen: de EQA en de EQB. Die laatste is in feite het ruimtewagenbroertje van de eerste. Ook Volvo biedt verschillende carrosserievarianten van de XC40 aan. Naast de reguliere crossover is er ook een coupé-variant van te koop. De Mercedes is een stuk groter dan de Volvo, maar dat geldt eerder voor de kofferbakinhoud dan de leefruimte in het interieur: de EQB heeft een verschuifbare achterbank nodig om tot de beenruimte te komen die de XC40 standaard biedt. Daarnaast snoept het optionele panoramadak in de Mercedes kostbare centimeters hoofdruimte af. De EQB heeft echter geen middentunnel: die zit in de Volvo juist behoorlijk in de weg.
Er past minimaal 419 liter bagage achterin de XC40. Dat is fors meer dan achterin een EQA, maar klap je de rugleuning neer, dan moet de Volvo met een maximale kofferbakinhoud van 1.295 liter in beide Benzen zijn meerdere erkennen. De EQB weet raad met minimaal 495- en maximaal 1.710 liter bagage. Onder de laadvloer gaat genoeg ruimte schuil voor een laadkabel. Me dunkt: wanneer je tegen meerprijs kiest voor de zevenzitsconfiguratie, zitten daar twee extra zitplaatsen verstopt. Ware het niet dat de laadkabel bij Mercedes verpakt zit in een chique tas. En die past dan weer net niet. Bovendien is de laadvloer van de Mercedes weliswaar vlak, maar tussen de rugleuning en de bagagebodem zitten fikse kieren. Daarin raak je eenvoudig spulletjes kwijt. Dat probleem heeft de Volvo dan weer niet. Bovendien kun je in de XC40 ook voorin nog bagage kwijt.
Rijgedrag
De voorwielaangedreven XC40 geldt bij Volvo als het elektrische instappertje, maar denk nu niet dat je onderweg op een houtje moet bijten: standaard levert de aandrijflijn 231 pk en 330 Nm koppel. Geef je bij het verkeerslicht vol gas, dan slaan je wielen door! In de door ons gereden uitvoering komt de Mercedes tot 190 pk. De EQB biedt echter 385 Nm aan koppel. En ondanks dat het evengoed een voorwielaandrijver is, krijgt ‘Das Haus’ al dat vermogen wél fatsoenlijk op de weg. Al zou dat heel goed kunnen komen, doordat de Mercedes meer dan twee ton weegt: de Volvo blijft daar een kleine 100 kilogram onder. De Zweedse crossover voelt dan ook wat lichtvoetiger aan, met een onderstel dat beter in balans lijkt. Aan de Mercedes kun je goed merken, dat hij is gemaakt om zeven personen te vervoeren. Zitten die er niet in, dan is de vering achter wat week. De EQB produceert daarnaast meer rijgeluiden. Denk aan de banden, maar bijvoorbeeld ook de rijwind.
Overigens blijft alles binnen het betamelijke: het valt alleen op wanneer je net in de Volvo hebt gezeten. De Benz heeft even goed voortreffelijk meubilair. De sportstoelen uit onze testuitvoering zitten weliswaar wat harder, maar daar ben je de Duitsers na een lange vakantierit vermoedelijk dankbaar voor. Iets meer zijdelingse steun was geen overbodige luxe geweest: omdat de EQB ‘bonkig’ is vormgegeven, kom je in de bocht al gauw in aanraking met de handgreep van de deur of de uit de kluiten gewassen middenconsole. De Volvo biedt meer leefruimte aan zijn bestuurder. Bovendien kun je met die elektrische auto probleemloos een caravan trekken: de XC40 weet raad met een aanhanger tot 1.500 kilogram. Wil je met de Mercedes op vakantie, dan kun je beter een stacaravan huren: het trekgewicht bedraagt 0 kilogram.
Actieradius
Ondanks een kleinere batterij en een hoger leeggewicht is de Mercedes aanzienlijk zuiniger dan de Volvo. De XC40 realiseerde tijdens onze actieradiusproef een gemiddeld verbruik van 16,4 kWh per 100 kilometer, terwijl de EQB een score liet noteren van 15 kWh rond. Dat is in beide gevallen beter dan de fabrieksopgave! De Mercedes wist zelfs dicht bij het in de folder beloofde rijbereik te komen: da’s 469 kilometer en wij kwamen na een nacht aan de laadpaal tot 458 stuks. Heel onhandig: bij Volvo lees je het aantal kilometers dat je op een volle batterijlading kunt afleggen op het infotainmentscherm af in plaats van op het dashboard. Vervolgens zie je drie getallen staan: de optimale actieradius, een reële schatting en een kaal minimum. Houden we die reële schatting aan, dan staat de betreffende 310 kilometer in schril contrast tot de 425 stuks die in de brochure wordt beloofd.
Om je te helpen daar alsnog meer dan 400 kilometer van te maken, kun je in de Volvo een speciale spaarstand selecteren. En anders zit er – ergens diep weggestopt in het menu – een schakelaar om de XC40 met alleen het stroompedaal te rijden. In de Mercedes kun je met flippers aan het stuur bepalen hoeveel remenergie er wordt teruggewonnen. In de felste stand heb je weliswaar de mechanische rem niet langer nodig, maar het stroompedaal valt minder goed te doseren dan dat bij de Volvo kan: de EQB reageert soms wat bruusk. De Benz heeft daarnaast een speciale spaarstand, maar daarbij wordt de werking van de klimaatcontrole beknot. Doe ons dan maar liever het intelligente navigatiesysteem, dat net als bij de Volvo de benodigde laadstops alvast voor je plant. Rijd je te hard om jouw bestemming te halen, dan wordt je daarvoor in de Mercedes gewaarschuwd door middel van een icoontje naast de snelheidsmeter.
Veiligheid
Bij de XC40 zijn niet alle hulpsystemen standaard. Dode hoek bescherming, een waarschuwing voor kruisend verkeer en een file-assistent bijvoorbeeld. Die hulpsystemen zitten weliswaar op onze testauto, maar dat is dan ook een rijk aangeklede variant. Mercedes stopt je standaard cruise control, vermoeidheidsherkenning, actieve rijstrookassistentie en een noodremsysteem toe. Voor alle overige reddende engeltjes moet worden bijbetaald. Ook wanneer je voor een duurdere modelvariant kiest, want onze testauto moest het bijvoorbeeld nog steeds zonder adaptieve cruise control stellen. Wat er vanaf het instapmodel al op zit, is een achteruitrijcamera. En da’s maar goed ook, want ondanks het forse raamoppervlak zitten de raamstijlen van de Mercedes vervelend in de weg wanneer je achter het stuur om je heen probeert te kijken. Daar hebben veel moderne auto’s last van, zo ook de XC40. Maar voor een merk als Volvo, dat veiligheid hoog in het vaandel heeft staan, weegt zo’n kritiekpunt extra zwaar.
Gebruiksgemak
Voor het infotainment werkt Volvo tegenwoordig samen met Google. Dat brengt een aantal voordelen met zich mee – navigeren met Google Maps, naadloos verder met de Spotify-playlist die je thuis aan het luisteren was, spraakcommando’s geven in gewone mensentaal – maar de ergonomie van de XC40 heeft er wel onder te lijden. Toen de crossover in 2018 op de markt verscheen, kon je eenvoudig van het ene naar het andere menu ‘swipen’, zoals je dat thuis ook op jouw tablet doet. Vandaag de dag moet je allerhande menu’s in, waarvan de logica ons vaak ontgaat. Waarom is ‘One Pedal Drive’ bijvoorbeeld niet gewoon een drukknop op de middenconsole? De Volvo heeft ook geen aan- of uitknop. Op de plaats van bestemming moet je simpelweg uitstappen en dat is het. Terwijl de opening voor de startknop van de traditionele brandstofversies er gewoon nog zit!
In de Mercedes kun je het infotainment volledig naar eigen smaak inrichten. Het ziet er aan boord ook nog eens gelikt uit, met twee fraaie schermen. De Volvo laadt met maximaal 150 kW. Bij een snellaadstation is de tijd die het je kost om een broodje te kopen dus voldoende om je reis te kunnen vervolgen. De laadsnelheid van de EQB is maximaal 100 kW. Maar de Mercedes is dan weer sneller klaar aan een regulier laadpunt: van leeg naar vol kost 5 uur en drie kwartier, waar je met de XC40 7 uur zoet bent. Een drie fasen laadmogelijkheid zit bij beide fabrikanten bij het aankoopbedrag inbegrepen. Mercedes compenseert zelfs de eerste 200.000 kilometer die je met de EQB aflegt, zodat de benodigde stroom altijd ‘groen’ is opgewekt.
Prijs
De voordeligste elektrische XC40 kost je € 46.995 of 569 euro per maand, wanneer je liever kiest voor private lease. Wij kregen van de importeur een Pure electric Ultimate-uitvoering mee. Voor € 54.995 beschik je dan onder meer over elektrisch bedienbare stoelen, een panoramadak, een 360 graden camera en een dikke stereo. In tegenstelling tot de Duitsers bieden de Zweden naast diverse motoren en aandrijfvormen ook verschillende batterijgroottes aan: eentje van 70- en een met 78 kWh aan accucellen. Wij reden de versie met het kleinste batterijpakket. Ongeacht de gekozen motorisering is het batterijpakket van de Mercedes altijd 66,5 kWh groot. De voordeligste EQB kost minimaal € 57.013 of 719 euro in de maand. Dankzij het AMG Line uitrustingsniveau moet onze testauto minstens 62 mille opbrengen. Dan heb je wel zaken aan boord als 18-inch wielen, een digitaal instrumentarium en een elektrisch bedienbare achterklep. Zowel de Mercedes als de Volvo worden ook met traditionele verbrandingsmotoren verkocht. Voorheen was een uitvoering op benzine vele malen goedkoper dan een elektrische variant, maar dat prijsverschil is in het geval van de EQB en XC40 geslonken tot pak ‘m beet 2.500 euro. Met de huidige brandstofprijzen heb je dat verschil er in al gauw uit. Zeker wanneer je bedenkt, dat je voor volledig elektrische personenwagens op dit moment nog altijd geen motorrijtuigenbelasting verschuldigd bent. Tot slot nog de garantie: Mercedes geeft 2 jaar fabrieksgarantie op de EQB. Voor problemen met de batterijen mag je 8 jaar of 160.000 kilometer bij de dealer aankloppen. Op de XC40 krijg je in principe 3 jaar fabrieksgarantie, maar de benodigde accu’s komen in aanmerking voor een garantietermijn van 8 jaar of 160.000 kilometer.
Winnaar
Tussen de Mercedes en de Volvo prijkt een prijsverschil van 7 mille. Toch vinden we niet dat we appels met peren aan het vergelijken zijn. Dit type elektrische crossover kost bij de Duitsers nu eenmaal een hoop geld. Niet alleen de XC40 is voordeliger, dat geldt ook voor de Audi Q4 e-tron en de binnenkort te introduceren BMW iX1. Mercedes biedt voor die 57 mille een ruime en zuinige EV. Eentje waarvan je bovendien zonder schroom kunt zeggen dat je op schone energie rijdt. Maar wil je het jezelf een beetje aangenaam maken onderweg, dan ben je aangewezen op de gepeperde optielijst. Voor minder geld krijg je in het geval van de XC40 een crossover die plezieriger rijdt, meer gebruiksmogelijkheden biedt – of het nu gaat om het trekgewicht of de laadsnelheid – en even goed over de nodige binnenruimte beschikt. De Volvo wint dan ook deze vergelijkingstest.
